How it works
Classroom learning, hands in the creek.
NSEA has partnered with Western Washington University’s Environmental Science and Environmental Studies departments to offer two academic certificates that blend classroom learning with hands-on experience through the Stream Stewards Internship.
Over the two-year program, students complete one to two certificate-related courses each quarter for three to six quarters, plus 8 internship credits with NSEA (about 240 hours of work, split between two quarter-long internships). Tools, training, and transportation to field sites are provided by NSEA.
To apply, submit an application for the Stream Stewards Internship. NSEA staff review applications quarterly. If hired, you’ll meet with a faculty certificate adviser to map out coursework and with NSEA staff to plan your internship hours and activities.
These certificates were designed with the equity principles of Career Connect Washington in mind, with the intention of opening the field of environmental restoration to historically underrepresented students. We particularly encourage applications from BIPOC students, LGBTQ+ students, multilingual students, students with disabilities, lower-income students, rural youth, foster children, homeless youth, and young parents.
